

Born October 7, 1929 in Sydney, he was the son of the late Bernard Patrick and Anastasia (Dawson) Gallaway. Bernie was an active member of the community for many years; volunteering for many organizations offering freely of his time and energy. This included such positions as President of the Red Cross Society for Nova Scotia, a credit committee member of the Steel Center Credit Union, as well as a board member of the Cooperators. As a result of his many years of dedicated service to the community he was awarded the Kinsmen Club Citizen of the Year Award in 1978. Bernie served as a Stationary Engineer in the #3 Boiler, at the Sydney Steel Corporation, and retired in 1988 after 40 years. Following his retirement when not sitting in his rocker next to the love of his life, he enjoyed spending his days going for long drives exploring Cape Breton, taking short trips to PEI and Newfoundland and most of all spending time with and teasing his grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of his grandkids are left with fond memories of standing at the edge of Grandpa’s wooden rocking chair anxiously waiting for their turn at “See-Saw”.
Survived by his loving wife Christina Zita (McCarron) Gallaway, daughters Linda Walsh (Greg) Point Edward, Bernadette Confiant (Douglas) Dutch Brook, Theresa MacLean Lower Sackville, sons Daniel Gallaway (Laurie Ravanello) Mira, Stephen Gallaway (Sherry McHerron) Stratford, PEI and Blaine Gallaway (Natalie Keller) Howie Centre and son-in-law Kenny Ferrar (Alena Dixon) Mira; brother Tom Gallaway; sister Agnes Miller, both of Sydney. Also survived by 24 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Predeceased by his infant son David; daughter, Kathleen Ferrar (Kenny) and sisters Margaret Marsh and Delores Fitzgerald.
Visitation to take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George Street, Sydney, on Sunday, September 22 from 2– 4 and 7 – 9 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am at St. Theresa’s Church, Whitney Avenue, Sydney, Monday September 23, Rev. Jim Oliver will officiate. Interment will be 10 am Tuesday at Resurrection Cemetery.
