

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Michael Bernard Bryden as the result of a car accident on January 22, 2006. Born in Sydney on February 6, 1954, and raised in South Bar, Bernie was the son of the late John and Bernadette ( MacGillivary ) Bryden. Bernie was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University and the former Technical University of Nova Scotia ( Dal Tech ), graduating with a Degree in Civil Engineering. Bernie was involved in most of the major construction projects in the Maritimes.
Bernie leaves behind many great accomplishments, first and foremost, his loving family. He began his career as a project engineer for the Little Narrows Gypsum Mine. From 1979 through 1990, he was employed as a senior project engineer with the Cape Breton Development Corporation, where he completed major projects such as the Railroad Transportation Center, the Lifting Bank Center, the Lingan Rotary Breaker and the Phalen Mine Development. In 1990, Bernie moved to private industry and was involved as a senior engineer and project manager for the following major projects: The Point Aconi Generating Station, The Dalhousie Generating Station, The Confederation Bridge in P.E.I., Sable Offshore Gas, Coldson Cove Generating Station, Expansion of The MacDonald Bridge in Halifax and N.B. Power. He was currently employed with Fleur-Daniels at The Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John, N.B. He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. Bernie's expertise and professionalism as an engineer preceded him and he was highly regarded throughout the Maritimes.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Linda (Burns), Sydney; his wonderful children, Sam and Margaret, Sydney; David and Graeme, Calgary; sisters, Cheryl Gillis, Dartmouth; Anita (Blaine) MacKinnon, Beaver Cove; Elaine (Charlie) Cuff, Howie Center; and Joanne Bryden, Mississauga, Ont.; brothers, Gerard (Sandra), Howie Center; Ken (Barb), Timberlea; and Raymond (Mimi), Holden, Mass. Bernie also leaves behind nieces, Kim, Jesslyn, Erin, Conor, Cathleen, Sydney and Alessandra; and nephews, Bobby, Devin, Senna, Clay and Cristiano; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents, John and Bernadette; brother, Gerard; sister, Constance; nephew, Alan; and brother-in-law, John Gillis.
Visitation for the late Mr. Bryden took place at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel on Thursday, January 26th, 2006. The funeral mass was celebrated on Friday, January 27th, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Alphonsus Church with Rev. Paul MacGillivary officiating. Interment was in the Parish Cemetery, Low Point.
