Catherine’s family is heartbroken to share the sad news of her passing. She passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at the AnCala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Catherine was born in Whitney Pier on February 20, 1931 to P.J. Carroll and Elizabeth Carroll (Evans). She attended Mount St. Vincent University where she studied accounting. Catherine worked for many years in various business positions until she decided to stay at home to be a full-time mom. She was an early entrepreneur and started several small ventures to make extra money. One such endeavour was with DEVCO and was the predecessor to what later became the Bed and Breakfast Program. She was quite industrious and very handy when it came to doing whatever needed to be done. Our house was certainly not a dull place! In her earlier years, Catherine could be found painting her house on Alexandra Street, building a fence on Heathview Drive, plowing and planting a garden, and doing anything that allowed her to be outdoors. She loved being out in the sun and planting things. Catherine was an avid reader and loved a good game of Tarabish or Rummoli. We have many fond memories of Sunday drives, berry picking, bottle hunting in the middle of nowhere, and picnics in some pretty interesting and unusual places. We also have great memories of rather competitive card games played on Alexandra Street and Heathview Drive, where any amount of snow gave rise to a storm party and dozens of card games. Catherine is survived by her children, her daughters Sharon MacLeod, Catherine Messervey, Irene Carroll, LeeAnne MacLeod-Archer (Simon Archer), her son Douglas MacLeod (Pamela MacLeod), her son-in-law Raymond Carroll; her grandchildren Lynn (Greg), Jan (Dave), Lisa, Kenny (Stacey), Andrea (Phil), Evan, Tyler (Candice), Meghan (Ben), Jennifer (Austin) and Gary; her great grandchildren Logan, Austin, Callie, Kohen, Kasen, Emma, Lily and Emmett, sisters; Mary (Bill) Cody & Irene MacDonald. Besides her parents, Catherine was predeceased by her husband Douglas MacLeod, a son Douglas Parker in infancy, her daughter Maureen Carroll, her sister Florence Keay and her brother Vincent Carroll. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the ER at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who were so good to us, in the midst of an overflowing ER, especially Dr. Melanie Adams, Lee-Ann and Nicole and others whose names we didn’t get. Sending a huge heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff at the AnCala Unit, especially Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino, Dr. Mary Ann Campbell , all the nurses, the Hospice volunteers and others who make it so much easier for loved ones and their families to be comfortable at such a difficult time.Catherine’s wishes are for a private family service and visitation. The family will welcome visitors for a reception at 3pm at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Sat Nov 30th, 2019. She will be laid to rest beside her loving husband at Resurrection Cemetery. Donations in Catherine’s memory can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Northside Community Guest Home Foundation.Online condolences may be sent to her family by visiting www.twcurry.com

Remembering Kay is easy---she was one of a kind. I can remember when Kay and Dougie celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary at our place---between games outside with family and dancing inside the whole night was one to not forget. Two sister-in-laws ending up going home with each others glasses and not realizing the difference.
Card games at their place was a hoot---voices got loud---some were not good losers--but at the end of the evening you know that you had fun and a full belly.
She will be missed

Sorry to hear that Kay has left us. She would always make me laugh whenever I would talk to her. She will be with Cookie now and will be happy as ever. Sorry we can’t be there with the family as we are both in Florida and not returning until mid December. Love Sharon & Tommy Mac Donald.
