Donnie was the son of the late Patrick and Etta (Horne) Murray of Grand Lake Rd., Sydney. Born on April 18th, 1945, Donnie spent his early years having fun in the neighborhood, fishing, fixing bikes and anything else that needed fixing. He also enjoyed spending time with family at the bungalow on the Mira. Donnie took many dips in the Mira River and later purchased his own bungalow where he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Donnie attended Sydney Academy, followed by the Eastern Institute of Technology and became a Red Seal Electrician. He worked for many years in his field and was a highly respected member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 48 years, retiring in 2018.
Donnie loved his family deeply. He cared for his parents for many years and was always concerned for their well-being. He loved to keep in touch with those he cared for and wanted to hear about all their news and latest adventures. Donnie's stewardship and passion of generational knowledge was very important to him.
Donnie spent a great deal of time with his friend Leonard Harris, to whom he acted as a father. They enjoyed being together, fishing, hunting, building stock cars and travelling about the Island. They shared laughs and good times along with Donnie's lifetime friend Rose, now deceased.
He had a great sense of humor and was often ready with a line that created laughter and camaraderie. He had many stories to tell and always welcomed hearing new ones. Donnie could often be seen reading the Cape Breton Post and enjoying a good cup of tea. Donnie had a strong Catholic faith. His early years in church started at St. Augustine's Parish of which his father was a founding member.
Donnie is survived by his sister, Emily (Robert) Otterson, Truro, brothers Thomas (Claudette) Murray, Westmount, Robert Murray, Mira, and Patrick (Bernadette) Murray, Coxheath. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Anne Marie, Brian, Kevin, Tommy, Michelle, Troy, Kimberly, Harvey, Jonas, Matthew, Emily, Christine and Patricia and great nieces and nephews, Dylan, Derek, Shelby, Zahara, Ashlyn, Carleigh, Bayly and Avery.
