It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Edward DeCourcy of Sydney Nova Scotia. Born in Sydney on January 4th 1926 to the late George and Nora (Donovan) DeCourcy. George grew up and resided for most of his life in Sydney's North-end. He had a great love of his community, as was demonstrated through his volunteering with many events and committees over the years including Sydney's Bicentennial committee, Sydney's Canada Games committee as well as several other organizations. George spent his entire 44 year career with CN railway, working various positions over the years, enjoying his work and the many great friends he met over the years. Sacred Heart Church was also an integral part of his life, his faith drove his commitment to supporting and help those within the church community and beyond by holding many roles including lecturer, Parish council and supporting those less fortunate than him. He had many friends over the years in large part because of his quick wit and enduring kindness to anyone he ever met, seeing goodness and value in everyone regardless of their circumstance. He lived with dementia for the past several years, however this condition did not rob him of his many great qualities including politeness, manners, kindness, his beautiful singing voice and his deep enduring faith in God. Family was very important to George and he loved the many get togethers with his family over the years, hosting many gatherings at his home for family near and far. He is survived by his wife and love of his life Regina (Quirk), son Bill (Sydney), daughters Noelle (Sydney), Frances (Michael) Chiasson (Sydney), grandchildren Noella and Kathleen (Jonathan) Chiasson, sisters Marie Dunn (Sydney) and Bertha Bonelli (New York), sister-in-law Theresa DeCourcy (Sydney) . Besides his parents he was predeceased by son George, sisters Rita, Bernice , Eileen (MacEachern), Theresa (Moreau), brothers Thomas, Reverend Bill and John 'Jack' DeCourcy. The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care for the support they provided over the past few years, as well as Dr Glen Worth, family Dr for many years. A visitation will take place at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Friday, October 9th from 6-9pm with a Funeral Mass at St Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney on Saturday, Oct 10th at 10:00 am. with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed via TW Curry's facebook page. Aunt Regina, Billy, Noelle, and Francey

I just heard about Uncle George. Though he passed on to the next life…he had a great life here surrounded by caring family especially when he needed them the most in the last few years. We may never know God’s plan but we still keep faith.

I missed visiting Cape Breton and George this summer due to the Canadian/American border being closed. Guess I will see him later when its my turn to go.

George was a real sport. He could hold a conversation and never miss a beat. Always friendly and hospitable to us when we visited. Couldn’t imagine not having him part of our extended family. He’ll be genuinely missed.
He might not be around but his legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren.

See you next summer
God Bless

Dear Gina, Bill, Noelle and Francie,
Please accept my sincerest condolences. I am saddened to hear of the passing of George. He and your entire family were great friends and neighbours as we grew up together on York Street.
George influenced my life by sharing with me his thoughts on religion, politics, and treating people well.
I have very fond memories, from my youngest days, of being in the car with he and Bill and the many chats we had about current affairs.
His singing talent also extended outside the church, he could sing anything that came on the car radio. I recall Roger Whittaker as bringing him special joy and that he could whistle at least as well as Roger.
George shared his infinite patience with everyone who knew him and although we tested it now and then he always looked past our shenanigans.
I hope you derive some comfort in the knowledge he is now with Georgie.
You have the good fortune of being a strong family and will derive support from each other as you make your way forward.
With Sympathy,
