Dad was predeceased by the love of his life, our mother Naphie to whom he was married for 68 years. He would tell anyone who would listen that he was a lucky man – he lived a good life and had a great wife
Dad was predeceased by his parents Neil and Lillian Tomie, his only brother Fred and his cherished sisters Dollie, Freda and Annie and his grandson Neal.
He is survived by his children George Leo (Debbie), Brian (Susan) and Donna. His beautiful grandchildren Darrell (Nicole), Courtney, Chandler (Tea), Ellen, Brynn and Bruce.
He was blessed with a loving companion for the last five year, June Byrne. We are so grateful for her loving presence and the time they got to share. Dad felt equally blessed by June’s family and being embraced as one of them.
Dad proudly served his country during the Second World War as part of the Nova Scotia Highlanders regiment. He returned from overseas to pursue and marry our mom. He worked hard over the years to provide for his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand in his community, especially with the Cedars Club. In his younger years he was an avid bowler, passionate card player and occasional curler. Of course, he loved his cribbage games and we would play for hours.
When he retired at the age of 61 he started his second career cooking and baking for mom and anyone who dropped in. He loved nothing more than to share recipes and food. Of course, we all love that he grew our grape leaves and mint in his backyard garden. Dad walked every day, no matter the weather, and relished in the notoriety that came when CTV profiled him at age 90. During the interview he said, “just keep moving and seeing the world each day though new eyes”. Words he lived by every day.
Dad loved people and he quickly made friends everywhere he travelled. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. To all who loved him and made him feel loved we thank you. You are what kept him going and gave his life joy and meaning. He held each of you close right to the end.
We also want to thank the doctors, nurses, homecare and Veteran Affairs for all you did to provide care, comfort and support. Dad never wanted to leave his home and thanks to you he was able to be at home until the end.
