Born January 22, 1946, the son of the late John Angus Black and Sarah Catherine (Thomas) Black. Gerard lived in Salmon River, Grand Mira and moved to Sydney at a young age where he resided until the time of his death. Gerard began work at Sydney Steel at age 18 and remained there until its closure retiring with 36 years of service.
In his earlier years, Gerard enjoyed spending time at his bungalow at the family homestead in Salmon River. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12 and although in failing health for the past few years, he looked forward to his trips to Tim Horton’s for his daily chats where he made lasting friendships. A quiet person by nature, although he loved to speak his opinion. He had a great passion for older model cars, especially Lincolns of which he owned several of through the years.
He is survived by his brothers, Hughie, Etobicoke, Ontario, Kevin (Karen), Sydney. Also surviving is special friend Ann MacQueen and numerous cousins.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Francis, John Bryden, a sister Catherine in infancy and sister-in-law Lynn.
Visitation for Gerard will be held from 7 until 9pm on Friday, February 26 at TW Curry Parkview Chapel with a Funeral Service taking place at 11am on Saturday, Feb. 27 also at TW Curry Parkview Chapel with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating. Those wishing may attend virtually by watching the livestream on TW Curry’s Facebook page. Burial will take place at Forest Haven Cemetery in the spring.
