Before attending St. Martha’s School of Nursing in Antigonish, Gloria graduated from Holy Angels Convent in Sydney. She graduated with a Diploma in Nursing (Class of 1952), then completed the requirements for RN practice.
Gloria began her career working as a private nurse in Boston. After two years, she returned to Sydney to help care for her ailing father. Gloria then went to work with the Victorian Order of Nurses in Sydney and surrounding areas. She was dedicated to her profession and to the welfare of her patients, retiring from the VON after many years of service.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 64 years, Gerald MacDonald, and son, Daniel. She is also survived by a brother, Michael (Diane) Lachowiez.
Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Annie Jane (MacKinnon) Lachowiez. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers: Fred, Frank, and Robert (Bob) Lachowiez. Gloria was also predeceased by three sisters, Helen MacNeil, Gladys O’Neil, and Amilda MacKinnon Kelly.
We would like to thank Ron and Joanne Lachowiez for always being there as family members in times of need. Also to Karen MacNeil (Tom) for continued care and support for Mom when required. Mom was the happiest when her relatives and friends would visit at home throughout the years.
There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 17th, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, 1135 Victoria Rd., Sydney with Father Paul Murphy officiating.Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery following the mass.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of 3B and Dr. Worth, all of Cape Breton Regional Hospital, for providing excellent care and for taking the time to have conversations about everyday matters. Family flowers only. If you wish, a donation in memory of Gloria could be made to a charity of your choice.
