her passing, while in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Jean had
first been diagnosed with cancer in 2014 and had successfully taken it to task! However, when
it returned earlier this year and only after a 5 month battle did she finally succumb in the early
hours of October 3, 2019.
Jean was the daughter of the late John D. and Agnes MacPHEE and was born in New Waterford,
N.S. on August 9th, 1931. She leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Michael Flemming,
whose career within the Canadian Military took the couple and their family to Germany, Calgary
Alta, Halifax NS, Kapuskasing, Ont, Oromocto & Chatham NB, before settling down here in
Sydney, Nova Scotia where they’ve lived since 1978.
Jean will be remembered by her children, Stephan (Ruth) of Ontario, Norman (Anne) of British
Columbia and Leah (Derek) of Ontario. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Lauren, Sawyer
and Hadyn Flemming, as well as her surviving siblings, sisters Theresa Lee (Joseph), Viola Troke,
Frances Smith and Margaret Hornung, and her brother Steven (Dolly).
Jean was predeceased by her beloved sister Flora MacPHEE and her brother John Patrick MacPHEE. She has many nieces and nephews spread throughout the Maritimes and beyond who will miss their “Aunty Jean”.
Neither flowers nor donations please at the family’s request, however, those who wish to make a contribution in her honor may do so to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where Jean was provided extraordinary care and comfort.
Jean’s family wish to offer their genuine thanks to Dr. Gracie and his staff for their commitment
to her health for the last 41 years. As well a special thanks goes out to the Doctors, Nurses and
Staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Palliative Care Ward, the VON and her
continuing care team each of whom did a tremendous job throughout her final journey.
A service in celebration of Jean’s life will be held at the T.W. Curry Parkland Chapel, 755 George
Street Sydney, on Tuesday October 8th at 3 PM. Those who knew and loved Jean are welcome
to attend and following the service, a small reception will take place at Branch 12 Royal
Canadian Legion #101 Dorchester Street in Sydney at 4 PM.
