It is with gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of John C. MacKinnon on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney. John died peacefully with loving family by his side at the age of 88. He was born at Meadows Road on September 4, 1931, the oldest son of Neil P. and Elizabeth (Bessie Fraser) MacKinnon. John was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay.
At a young age, John travelled to Boston to seek employment and had a long and successful career with Boston Sand & Gravel. He was a proud member of the Teamsters Union. Even though he lived in Boston for many years, John never forgot his roots in Cape Breton and made many trips home to be with his family. John was a kind and generous brother and uncle and was a friend to many. He had a sharp and witty sense of humour, always loved to play a prank on his nieces and nephews, and enjoyed his life. John was a season ticket holder for the Boston Bruins and had many stories he would relay to his nieces and nephews. Many of us were quite envious that he got to see Bobby Orr’s Stanley Cup winning goal at Boston Garden in 1970.
John is survived by his sister Mary T. (Sydney), his brother Michael (Cecilia)(Howie Centre), his sister Theresa Gillis (Sydney), his brother Bernie (Sydney), his sister Minnie Flaherty (Braintree, Mass.), and his sister in law Marguerite MacKinnon (Sydney Forks). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his sister Peggy, his brothers Neil and Malcolm, and three sisters, Betty, Mary, and Annie, in infancy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.W. Curry Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10am, July 29, 2020 at St. Mary’s Church in East Bay with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery. Due to restrictions, seating in the church is limited to 50. Stories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com. Any memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or to a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care for their excellent care of our brother and uncle.
Until we meet again, John, rest in peace.
