We are very sorry to announce the passing of Joyce Babin, 64, on April 25. Joyce passed away peacefully at home after a short struggle with cancer. Born in Sydney, Joyce was the daughter of Oswald and Bessie Babin, who predeceased her. She is survived by her husband, Macdonald Gillis, her sisters Jeanette, Elaine (Dave), and Carol Ann, and brothers Leonard (Debbie), and James (Maureen). Joyce had many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and who will miss her, especially Hannah, Katherine, and Graham. The large Gillis family will miss her strength, wit, and laughter.
Joyce started her career in Metro Planning for the City of Sydney 30 years ago, and finished as a Manager with the Water Utility for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. She was highly respected for her smarts, her work ethic, and her extraordinary communication skills. When she retired 4 years ago, she put all those skills to work for Macdonald’s business and helped it to grow.
Joyce was generous, hard–working, kind, and the best friend anyone could ever have. This is clear in the many friends she had who are mourning her loss. For Joyce, nothing was better than friends, a good book, a glass of wine, and great food. If this could all happen on a beach while she was getting a tan, even better. She especially loved her getaways with the “Biddies”. Joyce and Macdonald traveled the world together and would have continued this if they were able.
Macdonald wants to thank Joyce’s sister Jeanette, and his sister Rosalie, for their strength and support of him in Joyce’s final days. He’d also like to thank Dr. Carol Critchley, the VON, and Palliative Care for helping Joyce and him during this difficult time.
Due to the pandemic, there will be no visitation. When we are able, there will be a celebration of Joyce’s life for family and friends. If you would like to make a donation in Joyce’s memory, please choose a local charity. Memories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com.
Joyce, you will never be forgotten.
