

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing on May 16, 2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, June Marie Joe. She was born to the late Christina Strout (Smith) and Eldwood James Strout on April 20, 1947 and raised by Rita Morris.
June was known for liking many things, including; going for car rides, visiting her family in We’koqma’q, playing cards with friends and family, Playing her bingo, and double up. She always had someone over for visits. If she wasn’t doing any of those things, she would be on the phone with her childhood best friend, Vinny Sapier. June and Vinny were inseparable. June was part of many things. One of June's greatest passions in life was helping others, and she carried that kindness with her everywhere she went. She had a caring heart and was always willing to offer support, comfort, or a helping hand to anyone in need.
For many years she devoted herself to loaves and fishes for 20+ years where she faithfully served the community with compassion, humanity and love. She believed strongly in treating everyone with dignity and care and her dedication touched the lives of so many people over the years. Her selflessness, generosity and unwavering compassion will always be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Besides her parents, she also predeceased by her first husband Juan Echevarria and second husband of 23 years Francis Gabriel Joe, son John Marshall, brother James "Jimmy" Strout, siblings by choice Annie "Toswal" Googoo, Mary "Janet" Bernard, Benjamin, Frank and Samuel Bernard and cousin Felix Smith.
June is survived and will be deeply missed by her children Jose Echevarria, Angelo Dejesus and Marion Nicholas, grandchildren Savannah, Anne, Erik, Joel, Romona, Rita, Allan Jr., Allison, Dalton, Devon, Alexandrea, Debrah , Aleigha and Angus, sisters Liza Strout, Nancy Bernard, Sheila Bernard, Eunice Bernard, Elizabeth "Betty" Googoo and Sharon Lafford (nee Bernard) and step sister Carmelina Googoo as well as siblings of the heart Mary Catherine, Molly Pierro, Madeline Bernard, Louis Joe Bernard, Gilbert Bernard, Charles Bernard jr., Robert "Kelly" Bernard, John L. (Darla) Bernard and Elizabeth Bernard, cousin Rubina Norton and numerous great grandchildren and goddaughter Victoria Francis.
Visitation will take place at the Gabriel Centre starting at 7pm on Thursday, May 28 and continuing until the Funeral Mass which will take place on Saturday, May 30 at 10:00 am at Holy Family Church in Eskasoni with Fr. Antolin Asor officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery and Salite in the church hall will take place immediately following the Mass.
