Katherine “Kay” Huskey (nee Abbass) passed away peacefully on November 30, 2022. She was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on April 8, 1933, the tenth of twelve children of Jobe Abbass and Lily Khattar Abbass. She is survived by her siblings, Annie Hashem, Tony Abbass, Sr. Simone Abbass and Cyril Abbass, her 8 children: Don Huskey, Marie Elene Flood, Lili Trudeau, Ted Huskey, Frank Huskey, Mona Lisa Dickinson, Tony Huskey, John Huskey and 12 grandchildren.
After finishing school Kay went to Goosebay, Labrador where she worked as a secretary for the US Airforce and where she met her late husband, Don Huskey. Big bands would visit the area to entertain the troops and you know Kay, loves to sing, so she would be up on the stage singing with them. Transferred every 3-4years, Kay became an expert at packing and organization. She was the family General and the kids - her troops. She returned to the workforce when her youngest started school and retired after 25 years with the Liberty County Georgia School System. Being around so many young people kept Kay young and energetic. She is remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness and the words of wisdom she shared with all around her. She volunteered in several community organizations and in particular, her parishes in the many military assignments in which they lived. Due to military obligations, the family relocated in United States, Germany and Canada, 10 times over a period of 20 years.
Bingo was part of her social life where she would spend her Sunday afternoons with friends and fellow players. If Bingo were an Olympic sport, Kay would have been a Gold Medalist.
After retirement and the onset of ill health, Kay wanted to return home to Cape Breton where she spent her final years among her family and friends at Parkland Cape Breton and the CND Health Care Centre. She had a dynamic, bold personality and you knew when she entered a room. She added joy and laughter to the daily life of those around her.
We are grateful to the staff of the Health Care Centre and MacGillvray Guest Home for their exceptional care and kindness during her last years. During Covid, when her children were unable to visit from the US, the staff wonderfully provided Video visits with her children on weekends, where laughter and singing were the order of the day. Words cannot express what Kay’s children feel in their hearts for those who were there for their mother when they could not be.
A Funeral Mass for Kay will be held on Friday, Aug 4th at St. Mary's Church in East Bay at 3pm, Fr. Jobe Abbass to officiate. A reception will follow in the East Bay Fire Hall with burial to take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in Sydney. To share memories and condolences please visit www.twcurry.com.
