The family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of Marion MacKinnon, formerly of Welton Street, Sydney on July 30 at the age of 99. Marion was born March 6, 1926, in Centreville, Sydney Mines, the daughter of the late Richard and Martha (Confiant) Cox.
Marion lived most of her life in the Welton Street area of Sydney. Caring for and raising children would be her lifelong career, first as a job in North Sydney and then as a mother of five children. Marion often ran her “business” from her kitchen which was always adorned in Red and White, her favorite colors. She loved her home and took great pride in maintaining her property, adorned with red geraniums and her white snowball bush.
It was from here, her home, that she would become known for her love of card games, some of which included poker, tarbish and Skip Bo, along with telling many interesting stories and endless jokes. Mom always believed in staying in touch with family and friends, near and far. She valued music and education and attended many concerts well into her eighties and nineties. She will also be remembered for her knitting and crocheting.
Marion is survived by her daughter Marion (Frank Potter) and three sons, Richard (Bernice), Ontario, Michael, Sydney and Sandy (Pam), Alberta; eight grandchildren, Lisa, Julie, Chad, Kelly, Breagh, Gillian, Keith and Reece; six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Avery, Cole, Karley, Darcey and Frances. She is also survived by her brothers John Cox, North Sydney, Clifford (Cathy), Grand Prairie and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Marion was predeceased by her husband Michael MacKinnon, formerly from Long Island/Georges River, and daughter Catherine Hanrahan (Ron), sisters Ella (Peter MacKinnon), Caroline(George Holyoke), Irene (John Ford), brothers Louis (Shirley), Robert (Bridget), Michael (Mary), David (Nellie), and Harold (Jane).
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all staff of the MacGillivray Guest Home for their professional and loving care of mom for the past three years. As well we wish to thank the many great friends and relatives who took the time to visit mom while she lived at MacGillivray. There will be a visitation for mom held at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday, August 5 from 6-8pm. Private family service at a later time. Inurnment in Resurrection Cemetery.
