OBITUARY

Sr. Mary Ada Gordon

September 24, 1934August 28, 2019

Sister Mary Ada Gordon, CND S.S. Anne Elizabeth Sydney, NS

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Sister Ada Gordon, CND, on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at the CND Health Care Center, Sydney, NS.

Born on September 24, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Ada (Bown) Gordon, Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Sister Ada is survived by her sisters, Theresa and Frances Gordon; and brothers, Charles ‘Chuck’ (Jen), John, Alexander ‘Skipper’ and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Sisnette, and brothers: Bill, Bob and brother-in-law John Sisnette; sisters-in-law, Maureen and Nancy.

Sister Ada taught the Primary Grades for thirty-four years; seven years in Mabou and twenty-seven years in Port Hood Nova Scotia, years in which she applied her variety of gifts, evidenced by the number of students who kept contact with her over the years.

She retired from teaching in 1991 and embraced a new ministry in 1992 as co-ordinator of St. F.X. University students in residence at Mount St. Bernard, Antigonish, NS. This change in ministry was a further revelation of Sister Ada’s giftedness as she worked professionally with these students, offering them compassionate support and encouragement.

In 2011, Sister moved to Parkland Cape Breton, Sydney, a residence for Retirement Living. There, she continued her generous service in a new ministry as Bursar for the CND Sisters in residence, a position which she held until sickness required a transfer to the CND Health Care Center where she died on August 28.

Throughout her life, Sister Ada had a special place in her heart for her family, her many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends: they were all “family” to her. The mutual love among all of them was evident in their frequent visits to her residence and her “home” visits on weekends. Ada was the confidant for the older family members and a ‘fun-mate’ and teacher for the younger members. She will also be remembered as a faithful and compassionate member of the CND community and was appreciated greatly by the other residents of Parkland whom she supported by her visits and conversation.

Visitation will take place at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Monday September 2 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm with a Bible Service at 6:30 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 3rd with interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
