It is with deep sadness that we as a family announce the passing of our eldest brother, Michael Ronald Gillis 'Ronnie' on April 18, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in June 1939 in Sydney. He was the son of the late Rannie and Mae Gillis of Fairview Street. Ronnie was a long time resident in Unit 1-D at the Regional Hospital since its opening. He considered this to be his home and the wonderful staff of 1-D as part of his family. Ronnie had a unique personality, sharp memory and an infectious curiosity about the everyday happenings in the community. He was an avid daily reader of the Cape Breton Post scanning all sections of the paper right through to the classified ads. He enjoyed listening to his radio, especially to the news and the Cape Breton Eagles games. He was also a big supporter of his Maple Leafs.Ronnie also had an interest in the televised proceedings on Channel 10 of current local affairs. He appreciated the many treats he received and his favourite food was anything he wasn’t supposed to eat. Ronnie is survived by his siblings, his sister Rochelle Farrell of Cole Harbour, his brothers Joe (Anne Marie) of Sydney and Lawrence (Lynne) of Toronto. He was a special uncle to Doug, Denise, Dana, Joanne and Graeme. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law Tom Farrell. The family wish to acknowledge and thank the staff of Unit 1-D for their compassion, kindness and special care for Ronnie. Special thanks to David, Monty, Sam, Pam and Julie as well as his many other caregivers over the past years. Ronnie touched the hearts of all staff and fellow patients who he encountered each day. His passing will leave a void in the daily routine on Unit 1-D. Ronnie was dearly loved by his family and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Memorial donations in honour of Ronnie may be made to the Mental Health Department through the Cape Breton Hospital Foundation. Due to the current health crisis, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date. Memories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com.
