OBITUARY

Rose Winnifred Buckland

February 24, 1929June 25, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we the family of Rose Buckland announce her passing on Thursday, June 25th at Harbourstone Enhanced Care. Born on February 24th, 1929 in Sydney, Rose was the daughter of the late Mary and Wilfred Howard Sr. Rose is survived by her husband of 70 years, Gerald “Jack” Buckland and three sons, Howard “Huck” (Bea), Bill (Donna) and Brad (Shari). She is also survived by brothers Wilfred Jr. “Butch” and George (Joanne) Howard as well as sisters Ellie Aucoin and Joan Smith. Rose leaves behind many nieces and nephews who brought much joy to her life, especially Wendy and Mary Dawn Howard who held a special place in her heart. Besides her parents, Rose was predeceased by brother Donnie Howard, sisters Catherine Howard, Karen Howard, Harriet Beardmore and Gladys Travis. Rose is also predeceased by brothers-in-law Al Beardmore, Donnie Aucoin, Milt Smith and Gerald Travis Sr. The highlight of Rose’s life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many years caring for her grandchildren and the relationship she shared with each one was loving, tender and unique. She will be missed deeply by Allison (Matt) Ratchford, Keith (Kayla) Buckland, Justine (Shaun) Currie, Emily (Ryan) Walker, Raeanne (Nathan) and Kristine Buckland. In the most recent years, Rose became a great-grandmother to Brielle, Blakely, Lawson, and Kase who she loved dearly. Rose was known for her love of dancing, hockey, playing cards with her club friends and baking. In fact, Rose’s apple pies and tea biscuits won ribbons at the local Albert Bridge Country Fair. She was an active member of Immaculate Heart Parish CWL. As a season ticket holder for the CB Oilers and CB Eagles, Rose’s love of hockey was evident. She could also be found at most tennis courts across the province cheering on her son Bill. Rose was social and outgoing and made friends wherever she went. On the weekends she enjoyed spending some time at the casino or could be found having a “cup of tea” at the Maple Leaf or Smitty’s as the staff treated her like family. The family would like to thank Dodie (Buckland) MacDonald, Delores Rose Drennan (Rose’s maid of honour) and the late Carmie McMullin for many years of friendship. As well, the staff at Kimberly Hall (Mira Bay) Harbourstone Enhanced Care who went above and beyond their duties in their care of Rose, especially during the Covid Pandemic. Cremation has occurred and an immediate family celebration of Rose’s life will take place outdoors on July 4th. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.twcurry.com. Donations in memory of Rose can be made to Hospice Cape Breton.

I have many fond childhood memories of the times that I spent at Glady and Gerry's. Their house was so close to the Buckland's that we always knew when one of Rose's award winning apple pies was coming out of the oven. That would be when Gerry Jr. and I would go over to see what Billy was up to. Rose must have picked up her great cooking skills from Nanny Howard who would always be in her kitchen ready to serve up some special treat when the kids came calling and if she didn't have any treats she would send you out to the backyard with the basket to pick some apples from the tree. Thanks for being a special part of my life Rose and sharing your family with me.
