OBITUARY

Mrs. Shirley Gwendlyn Monahan Pace

February 5, 1934April 23, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and dear friend to many. Shirley was born on February 5, 1934 and passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020, in The Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Shirley was an athlete. She was a basketball star in her youth and played tennis and golf as an adult. She represented Nova Scotia in several Canadian Championships in curling. She loved playing cards and socializing with her many close friends, especially Carole MacKinlay, who stayed in contact with her until the end. She will be greatly missed by all but especially by her children to whom she was very devoted. Shirley is survived by her nine children; Laurie Halifax/Sydney, Paula (Sheldon MacDonald)Sydney, Patricia (John Mullowney) Dartmouth, Rudy (Cathy Bowes) Sydney, Carole (Bill Sawyer) Toronto, Linda (Jerry MacIntyre) Sydney, Jamie (Patty MacNeil) Sydney, Stephen, Inverness, Donna (Reinder Bekkema) Netherlands and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren as well as a large number of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Marlene Cooke, Charlottetown and sisters in law Annelee Kerr, Sydney and Evelyne Phinnemore, Toronto. Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Rudy Pace. Shirley and Rudy were well known for their many social gatherings with friends and family and the way they opened their home to everyone over the years. Shirley had a wonderful talent for making people feel part of the family, always welcoming and never judging. Many of her children’s friends thought of her like a second mother and grandmother. She worked hard, sacrificed for her children and never complained but was always ready for fun and had a great sense of humour which she maintained right to the end of her life. She is also predeceased by her parents Virginia and Hugh Monahan, brother, Jack, sister, Uta, brother, Hugh (Sonny), sister, Camilla, and brother, Jimmy. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at both My Cape Breton Home for Seniors and The Cove Guest Home for the loving care they gave to our mother. Shirley has been cremated and a memorial service will take place at a later date when social restrictions are no longer in place. Memories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com.

My deepest condolences to Shirley's family on the loss of a kind and wonderful lady. From helping me out as a beginner at the curling club to sharing many hands of bridge at our weekly bridge games in each others homes, I got to know her. It was an honour and privilege to call her a friend.

Fondly,

Dear Laurie, Paula, Patty, Carole, Lindy, Donna, Rudy, Stephen and Jamie,

My condolences to all of you and your families on Shirley’s passing. I remember at a young age feeling so lucky that Shirley and Rudy were not just my aunt and uncle but also my godparents and I would always get something special on my birthday. Of course as I grew older I quickly realized what was special about them was not a birthday gift but the amazing, caring, fun couple that they were. One of the best compliments I could pay Shirley is that she was always so “cool” and that wasn’t a term you associate with many people a generation older than you. We are all lucky that she lived such a full life and I hope you are enjoying many great memories.

My deepest condolences to all of the Pace family on the recent passing of your Mom. I remember her fondly from the early days on Elmbank Ave. and then later on at Lingan Golf Course, and of course the requisite card game afterwards.
Wishing you all many fond memories of a life well lived.
