It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the death of the matriarch of our family, Susan Gushue. Mom died as she lived, with grace and dignity on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 in her 98th year, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her children by her side.
Born in Harbour Grace Newfoundland on May 3, 1913, she was the eldest child of the late George and Wilamena (French) Nichols.
Widowed at 48, Mom worked tirelessly to raise her 11 children, depending on her strong faith to guide her. Mom was a lady who always looked out for others. She was strong willed, quick witted and had a tremendous sense of humor. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Left to mourn are her 8 children Connie (Eric) LeGresley, Mississauga; Violet Clarke, Kingston; Hazel (Ron) Desrosiers, Kingston; Susan Ongo; Barbara (Sam) Carter; Terry (Annie); Patricia Neville (Dave MacKindrick); Deborah (Gary) Gallivan, all of Sydney. Also left to mourn are her 27 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind her sisters ‘Babe’ Hollahan, Sydney; Elizabeth Creber and Nellie Ellis, both of Ontario; two sisters-in-law Vera and Vicki Nichols and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Jack Gushue, her son Jack, daughters Mary and Colleen and twin boys Peter and Paul at birth. She was also predeceased by her grandson Jack Jr., 4 brothers Jerry, Wesley, Charles and Walter and her sisters Edna, Viola, Kay, Dot and Hazel.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Gushue. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Friday, December 9 at 11 am with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception will be held in the church basement following the service.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the MacGillivary Guest Home for their professional care. Mom loved living and being cared for by the staff who she considered her second family. A special thank you to Fr. Michael Rankin and Fr. Bill Roach, her spiritual advisors.
