It is with broken hearts that our family announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend William ‘Bill’ Martell, 75, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Monday, February 14, 2022.
Born in Sydney on May 16, 1946 to his parents the late Francis Daniel Martell and Matilda Elizabeth (LeRoy). Bill grew up in the north end of Sydney. He learned all the great things in life on Tin Can Alley like how to be a lifelong friend and neighbour. Bill was epitome of kindness, gentleness, loyalty, and generosity. He had a deep and steadfast faith that carried him through his entire life. One of his favorite places was Sacred Heart Church. He loved the church sometimes on Saturday night and again on Sunday morning.
Bill was a dedicated employee of the Sydney Steel Co. for over 30 years. In his younger years, Bill enjoyed his job as bartender at the French Club. He was blessed with many wonderful friends over the years. In a true testament to his character, he would never name them all for fear he would leave someone out. Bill spent his mornings after retirement at the Tim Horton’s on George Street visiting with his buddies where he took much joy in the camaraderie and conversation.
Bill loved THE great game of Tarbish which was a passion of his for over sixty years. Anyone who had the opportunity to play with him or alongside him knew just how much. He was an avid player who never turned away from a challenger, smiling with his winnings. He shared that passion with new and old friends when he ran Tarbish games at the Ashby Legion which supported their Children’s Christmas Party. He also taught his nieces and nephews the art of rumoli, not afraid to take all their money, good life lessons learned.
Bill was most loved by his wife of 48 years and 7 months Donna (MacDougall), children: Cathy (Dwayne) Hussey, Eileen, Frank (Tanya) and grandchildren Keagan Martell, Keeley and Aiden Hussey. He is also survived by his brother John (Audrey) Martell, brothers-in-law Arthur Sampson, Charlie and Peter MacDougall, George Prosser, sisters-in-law Betty Ann Rolfe, Marilyn Redshaw, Patsy Field, Bonnie MacDougall, Nina MacDougall and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by parents Matilda and Francis Martell, sister Mary Eileen (in infancy), sister Rosalie ‘Sissy’ Sampson, Loving in-laws: John and Anne MacDougall, In-laws: Catherine (Kate) MacNeil, Mary McGarry, Duncan MacDougall, John MacDougall, and Sally Prosser.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at the CBRH, VON and Homecare, and Dr. W. Saliba, Dr. Lucy Helyer of Halifax, Dr. AF D’Intino, Dr. Lata and their team for the care Bill received during his journey.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory to Children’s Wish Foundation or the Tom MacNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund. Cremation has taken place under the care of TW Curry Parkview Chapel. There was not a moment in his life where Bill did not extend kindness, loyalty and understanding. He was a true gentleman. He will be deeply missed.
