It is with broken hearts, great sadness and deepest regret that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, godfather, son-in-law, brother-in-law, coworker, a great friend and mentor to many, William Francis Gould Sr. (Billy Gould) on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 while in CCU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Billy was the son of the late Charles N. Gould and Annie Bridget (Basque) Gould.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 41 years, Rita Margaret Gould, mother-in-law Bessie Prosper, daughters Lydia Stevens (Allan), Annie B Gould, Tiffany Gould (Van), Lianna Gould (Shawn) and only son William Francis Gould Jr. (Shayla), grandchildren, Baylen, Keefe, Callie, Keirstin, Kassandra, Madison, Braeden Jr., Jasper, Van Jr., Alayah, Kaisley & William Francis III.
He also leaves behind his wonderful sisters Marjorie Johnson (late Stanley J), Jessie Gould, both of Eskasoni, Mary Ellen Paul (Blair) of Membertou, and Anita Marshall (Esmond) of Eskasoni, his brothers, Hubert Gould (Connie) of Eskasoni and Ronnie Gould (Carolyn) of Elsipogtog, godchildren Marla Sylliboy, Cheyenne Levi, Reggie Sylliboy Jr., Randon Tonterelli and Noah Gould, honorary Father Albert Marshall Sr, honorary siblings Richard Poulette & Leon Denny and honorary children Katelyn Francis, Giselle Stevens and Piel Herney. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers Ryan (Sandra), Charlie (late Catherine Jean), Noel Joe ‘Acho’, John James (Vera), and Terry (Kelly) Gould and father-in-law Wilfred Prosper Sr.
Billy will be missed by the staff of Mi’kmaw Lodge where he was employed for the last 20 years.
Billy was a passionate sports enthusiast, finding joy in hockey and softball. He often spoke about the ball teams he was a part of, from ‘Albert Marshall Construction’ softball team in his early years, to the Eskasoni Mets, Virick’s Bullets, Alpines, Potlotek A’s, the Athletics, Eskasoni Gouldies and many more. He attributed both his hockey and softball knowledge to his all time favorite coach, the late Milton Gould whom he always spoke highly of. He not only loved playing and watching the games, but also dedicated his time to coaching both sports, sharing his knowledge and inspiring young athletes. His coaching skills even led him to coach Team Nova Scotia for the North American Indigenous Games, leaving a lasting legacy. He took such pride in the many youth he had a chance to teach, coach, or share stories with, and they in turn always stayed in touch and were so happy to see him at ball fields or hockey arenas on his travels.
Music was another passion, and he showcased his talent as a bass player in the band Silver Moon, bringing rhythm and melodies to the hearts of many. His love of music inspired his grandchild Keefe who is now also in a band at his young age.
Billy’s impact went beyond the field and the stage. Billy was a true community builder, starting the Eskasoni Youth Centre in 1998. This safe haven not only provided youth with a place to gather, but it also created countless opportunities for them, fostering growth, support and friendship.
In addition to his involvement in sports and music, Billy had a deep love for fishing. He cherished the time spent with his children, casting lines, and creating memories on the water. Whether it was a peaceful day by the lake or an exciting fishing adventure, he treasured those moments of connection and shared joy. His pastime for entertainment include visits to the Casino where he made many lasting friendships.
Known for his TALKATIVE nature and quick wit, he had a special way of making people laugh. His humor had a touch of sarcasm, always light-hearted and never mean-spirited. He had a unique talent for giving nicknames to those he held dear, showing his affection and creating lasting bonds.
His love and kindness touched the lives of so many, he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitations will begin at 7PM on Sunday, April 14th 2024 at his family home at 4788 Shore Road, Eskasoni. Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30AM at the Holy Family Parish Church, 50 Gabriel St., Eskasoni on Tuesday, April 16th. Salite to follow.
