Charles Dennis Buckner (aka "Buck", "Dede") passed away at his home November 6, 2023 surrounded by family after a courageous three year battle with cancer.
Dennis was born October 20, 1948 in Alexander City, Alabama to the late Charles W. Buckner and Rebecca Dennis Buckner.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Nancy T. Buckner; two sons, Taylor Buckner (Celeste) of Auburn, AL and Ramsey Buckner of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Hudson Buckner, Gibson Buckner, and Wyatt Buckner of Auburn, AL; "almost" grandchildren, Taylor Grace Poer and Drew Poer of Hoover, AL; sister-in-laws, Paula Taylor Motes (Mac) of Mountain Brook, AL and Allison Taylor Poer (Dwayne) of Hoover, AL; nieces, Carrie Motes of Mountain Brook, AL and Abbie Motes Weigel (David) of Madison, AL; and great niece and nephew, Mac and Felicity Weigel.
Dennis is a graduate of Sylacauga High School, the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and the LSU School of Banking. He is past president of the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, a past president of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, a former recipient of Sylacauga's Distinguished Young Man of the year award, and a past recipient of the Alabama Bankers Association's Outstanding Young Banker of the year award. He is a lifelong member of the UAB Alumni Association and a member of the S Club Alumni. Dennis is a former member of The Donoho School Board of Directors, the Sylacauga Airport Board, the Sylacauga Jaycees, and the St. Andrews Episcopal Church Vestry where he also served as treasurer.
Dennis began his banking career at the First National Bank in Sylacauga in 1971. Later he joined Southtrust as President and CEO of Southtrust Bank of Clay County. He then became President and CEO of First Alabama Bank of Talladega County which changed to Regions Bank. He continued his career as President and CEO of Regions Bank of Calhoun and Talladega Counties before retiring after 32 plus years in banking.
Dennis enjoyed golf, football, bird hunting, his many friends and most of all his family. He never really met a stranger; and he exemplifies the saying that there are special people in our lives that never leave us, even after they are gone.
Visitation will be held from 1-2 pm Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga followed by a Celebration of Life Service. Afterwards a celebratory reception will be held at the Sylacauga Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Sylacauga City School Foundation at 43 North Broadway Sylacauga, AL 35150.
