

Dorthea Joan Barnes Scroggins of Chelsea, age 80, died peacefully at home on Sunday May 25, 2025 after several years of multiple health conditions. Joan was born in West Point, Georgia, but lived her childhood years in Stewartville, Alabama in Coosa County. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She married Moody Scroggins on March 9, 1969 and they celebrated 56 years of life together. She retired from the Talladega City Schools after 25 years working with young children. Joan loved her family and loved spending time with them and her extended family. She was very active in the lives of her children and grandchildren, attending their events as often as possible. She loved cooking and having family meals. She committed her life to Christ at a young age and loved going to church where she was very active until her health issues prevented her from doing so. She was a member of North Shelby Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Myrtle (Shaw) Barnes, and her brothers Ray and Mickey Barnes.
She is survived by her loving husband Moody Scroggins, son Chad Scroggins (Huyen) of Chelsea, daughter Kim Barton (Craig) of Calera, grandchildren Tyler, Chase, Minh and Son; sisters Pam Smith of Atlanta, GA, and Diane Mitchell (Terry) of Sylacauga, brothers Wayne Barnes (Martha) of Alexander City, Hugh Barnes (Sara) of Childersburg, Phil Barnes (Joan) of Quincy, FL, and Terry Barnes of Sylacauga, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Curtis and Son Funeral Home in Sylacauga on Thursday, May 29 from 1-2 pm followed by a service at 2 pm in the chapel. The family will have a graveside immediately following the service at Evergreen Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Chad Scroggins, Craig Barton, Frank Barnes, Nathan Barnes, Donny Barnes, Chris Barnes, Andy Barnes and Adam Barnes.
