He was vice-president of Western Supermarkets in Birmingham, AL, for almost 40 years. He was a longtime member of Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church where he served as an ordained elder and a deacon. At the time of his death, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sylacauga, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.Z. and Jeanne Smathers of Canton, NC and his first wife, Beverly Smathers. He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa E. Smathers, of Fayetteville, AL, his children, Mindy Faircloth (Glenn) of Mountain Brook, AL and Lisa M. Smathers of Columbia, SC, and his grandchildren, Avery and Beckett Faircloth.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Sylacauga, 100 South Norton Avenue, Sylacauga, AL 35150 or Alabama Cattlemen's Foundation, 201 S. Bainbridge Street, Montgomery, AL 36104.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
