Sylacauga, AL - Frank Unger, age 71, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025.
Frank Unger was born on May 19, 1953, near Sullivan, Indiana. At eight years of age, he moved with his family to Alabama. They settled just outside of Sylacauga, in Coosa County, where Frank spent most of his life.
In his early years, Frank's talent for painting and singing was unmistakable. He began painting while attending Weogufka High School, where he painted the Pirate's team mascot on the gymnasium wall. Frank was also an amazing vocalist. After high school he went into music as the frontman for several rock & roll bands, including Hands of Time, Straight Shooter, Dark Castle, and others.
Later, Frank turned to photography and again to painting. He worked as a photographer and created hand painted portraits of area residents for many years at Don Smith's Home of Photography.
Frank is survived by his brothers; John William "Bill" Unger (Sue), and Mike Gordon Unger (Sherry). Nieces include; Sharon Hamilton (Andy), Tabatha Hyatt (Jonathon), Tammy KosKella (Derek), Valerie Smith (Rob), and Rachel Robinson (Mac). Nephews are: Richard Thrower and Paul Kimbrell (Jenny). Frank also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephews too numerous to name.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, John Gordon and Mary Jane Unger; sister, Barbara Tucker; sister-in-law Mary Louise Unger, two nieces, April Unger and Heather Meeks.
Services will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Radney-Smith Funeral Home, 320 N. Elm Ave, Sylacauga, AL. 35150. Visitation begins at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Life Celebration at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Tommy Thornton of Weogufka Family Worship Center presiding.
