Mrs. Helen Sims Thomas, age 72, of Childersburg, lost her courageous battle with cancer on Saturday March 11, 2017. Her survivors include Husband, Jimmy Wayne Thomas of Childersburg. Daughters; Connie Nelson (Ben) of Childersburg, Teresa Williams (Eric) of Hiram, GA, and Karen Clennan (Joe), of Marietta, Ga.
She is also survived by Sisters Mary Faye Lett of Lineville and Diane Upchurch of Ashland. Brothers Gregory Sims and Michael Sims of Talladega. Grandchildren Brittany Parrott, Thomas Nelson, Calan Nelson, and Logan Williams. Great-Grandchildren Caden Nelson and Harlyn Parrott.
Helen was a 1963 graduate of Winterboro High School. She and Jimmy moved to Childersburg soon after they married. Helen became very active in her church, Bon Air Baptist, and community. She spent many hours organizing events along with her friends. With the help of her good friend Marian Payant, she decided to open Forget-Me-Not Flower Shop in 1983. She and Connie has continuously operated the business for more than 33 years. Connie will carry on the business in honor of her mom. Helen had a heart for her customers and friends.
One of Helen’s favorite activities was spending time with her friends. A few years ago, she began inviting a group of her high school classmates to lunch once a month at the shop. They are the Tuesday Girls. This was something special to Helen. She loved the fun times and laughter shared together.
When Helen first began her chemotherapy, she purchased a wig. While she was able to make such a purchase, she realized not everyone could. Her wish was to begin a ministry to provide headcoverings for fellow cancer patients. She felt this was God’s calling. With the help of her doctor’s office and Coosa Valley Medical Center, the Forget-Me-Not Sharing Hope and Love Foundation began in October 2016.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 14, beginning at 2 pm at Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:30 until 8 pm on Monday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coosa Valley Oncology and Hematology Center on the behalf of Helen’s Forget-Me-Not Sharing Hope and Love foundation.
