Ed was born the only child to Fred and Dessie Addison in Birmingham, Alabama. He was raised in Tarrant and near Geraldine in north Alabama. During his early years they lived in Tarrant but during the Great Depression, Ed and Dessie moved to Sand Mountain while his dad continued to work in Tarrant at TCI. Ed expressed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age, followed in Believer’s Baptism and sought to follow his Lord for all his life.
At 16 years of age, Ed graduated from Phillips High School and was awarded an ROTC scholarship to North Carolina State in the Officer’s Training program. As the war continued in Europe, Ed felt the urgency to participate as he could, so he resigned from the Army Air Corps Pilot Training and returned to Birmingham and enlisted in the Army. He went overseas and served in the 78th Infantry which included his participation in the Battle of the Bulge and then the American Operation in Berlin.
After the war ended, Ed graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later named Auburn University) in 1949 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Pi Tau Sigma honorary Mechanical Engineering fraternity and Tau Beta Pi, Alpha chapter of Alabama, for scholarship.
Ed married Edith Barber in December 1948 and moved to Childersburg in 1950 where he was employed by Kimberly Clark Corporation. Ed worked there until his retirement. Nancy, Cindy and Lynn were born to them in 1951, 1953 and 1956. Ed was an active member of First Baptist Church of Childersburg for many years serving as the Senior Boys Sunday School teacher, a Deacon, Finance Committee member, and many other roles. He was instrumental along with a great group of close friends in the growth of the church and the development of the physical campus there.
Ed lived most of his life in the home that he designed and built in 1961. He and Edith built a great life in Childersburg with a strong group of friends. There were many Rook card games that sometimes ended with cards in the fireplace or at least thrown across the room. Ed was a smoker until his pipe was cleaned in the toilet by one of the visiting children during a Rook game night. He never smoked again. There was always lots of laughter and good food at these events.
Ed was predeceased by his father and mother, his wife, Edith, daughter, Cindy and grandson-in-law, Aaron. Ed is survived by a daughter, Nancy, daughter Lynn and her husband, Bill. The grandchildren surviving him are Leslie and Lance Flisowski, Meredith and Adam Davis, Lauren and Brian Rumpel and Drew Webster. Great grandchildren surviving are Emma, Elise, Ewan, Olivia and fiancé Michael, William, Violet, Isaac, Ryan, Reid, Kenzie, Addison, Annie, Abigail, Allie and Ace and Great-great granddaughter, Mila.
A visitation for Henry will be held Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Childersburg, 200 8th Ave SW, Childersburg, Alabama 35044, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
Henry will be laid to rest in Greenhill Memorial Gardens, Old Sylacauga Highway, Childersburg, Alabama.
