

Dr. John Phillip Gooch, a distinguished chemical engineer and lifelong resident of the Southeast, passed away on January 21, 2026. At 84 years old, John split his time between the coastal peace of Miramar Beach, Florida, and the community of Brookhaven, Georgia.
Early Life and Academic Excellence
Born in New York City on June 6, 1941, John moved to Alabama as a child, spending his formative years in Talladega Springs, Alabama. His academic journey was defined by a rare level of excellence at the state’s most prestigious institutions. John graduated with honors from Auburn University with both a Bachelor’s and a master’s degree in chemical engineering. He continued his doctoral studies at the University of Alabama, earning his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1971.
A Career of Impact
John dedicated his entire professional career to the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. A respected expert and leader, he held various professional and management positions focused on air pollution control solutions. His work was instrumental in advancing environmental technologies, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of engineering and industrial safety.

Visitation: 12:00 PM CT at Curtis and Son Funeral Home, Sylacauga, Alabama.
Graveside Service: 12:30 PM CT immediately following the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the College of Engineering at the University of Alabama, honoring John’s commitment to the advancement of engineering and the education of future innovators.
