Joey had the biggest heart. He never met someone who he couldn't make a friend and no one who met Joey couldn't be his friend. He would help anyone with anything. He knew and loved so many people he could have been elected governor of the state.
Joey was an avid photographer in high school taking pictures of Aggie football for the Sylacauga News developing them in his own darkroom. After graduating from Sylacauga High School in 1971, he completed his BA in Journalism at the University of Alabama. He studied at RIT in New York in photography and printing before assuming a position at Dixie Color Printing in Sylacauga.
Joey was never satisfied with just one interest. He was certified in scuba diving and worked with rescue squads. He served as a volunteer paramedic, helped wire the Honda plant in Lincoln and assisted his brother Jim at Amaze Corporation. But, he found his happy place at Home Depot in Sylacauga. Beginning in the Garden section, he rose to senior member at the Prodesk where he was respected and sought after by many a contractor.
Joey met the true love of his life just about forty years ago and 37 years ago joined with Caprece Oliver to begin their family. While James P. McEwen, Jr was his stepson, Joey considered "Jamie" his son and loved him as his own. The same was true when Jamie had Logan. Joey considered Logan his grandson, and took excellent care of the little guy. Joey's other great love and part of the family was "Chipper" a Jack Russell mix he adopted and walked religiously up Lloyd Road and on Terrace Road. The two were a pair who knew everyone along the route and everyone knew them.
Joey and Caprece loved the beach, particularly Sandals in Jamaica, where they spent their honeymoon, and Panama City Beach including dinner at Shuckums for raw oysters. They were looking forward to their next beach trip coming up in two weeks. Joey was an excellent gardener and had a special love for roses and palm trees. The landscaping around the swimming pool is lush and beautiful and both Joey and Caprece enjoyed it daily, weather permitting.
Joseph T. Clinton was born the third child of Joseph T. and Helen S. Clinton on October 5, 1953 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Joey and his family moved to Sylacauga in 1960 where he essentially grew and loved. Joey was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Helen Clinton; his brother, James J. Clinton; and his in-laws Frank (PA) and Frances Oliver.
He is survived by his loving wife Caprece Oliver Clinton; sisters, Ann Clinton Sewell (Michael) of Birmingham and Kathy Clinton Sulkis (David) of Houston, TX; son, James P. McEwen Jr. (Ashley and Madison, Toren, and Ava) of Sylacauga; grandson Logan (Catherine) McEwen of Chelsea; niece, Christine Sulkis of Austin, TX; nephew, Michael Sulkis of San Francisco, CA and sister-in-law, Regina Joiner Clinton of Lake Martin. Many more family members also mourn the loss of Joey.
Visitation will be 12-1:30 PM on Saturday, July 5 at Curtis and Son North Chapel. A Celebration of Life Mass will follow at 2:00 PM at St. Jude Catholic Church with Rev. Father Shobhan presiding. Internment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
