passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025. Visitation will be at Knollwood Presbyterian
Church, Sylacauga, Alabama, on Thursday, June 5 at 12:30 PM followed by a funeral
service at 2:00 PM.
Kathy was born on July 7,1929 to Marvin and Bertha Baxter in Tuscaloosa, AL. Upon
graduation from The University of Alabama in 1951, she moved to Sylacauga, AL for a
teaching position. There she met her future husband, Charles Crowther. They married in
November of 1952. Charles took a job in sales with Avondale Mills, and they moved
soon after to Chattanooga, TN, where their first child was born. Two more children were
born in Boston before Kathy and Charles settled in Charlotte, North Carolina, where
their last child was born. In 1973, they moved back to Sylacauga where Charles finished
his career with Avondale.
In addition to being a wife and mother, Kathy became active with Christian Women’s
Club while in Charlotte. After she and Charles moved back to Sylacauga, she started a
new chapter of Christian Women’s Club. In addition, she was active in a number of civic
endeavors and was a founding board member of the Sylacauga Arts Council. The
Sylacauga Exchange Club named her Woman of the Year in 1980 for her many
contributions to the community.
Her Christian faith was central to Kathy’s life. She had a personal relationship with
Christ and was a strong influence on both her family as well as others throughout her
life. She enjoyed nothing more than discussing theological questions and gained energy
from a lively debate.
Charles and Kathy were actively involved as founding members of Knollwood
Presbyterian Church (PCA) until their move to North Carolina in 2001. She and Charles
spent a year in Odessa, Ukraine in 1993, as part of an organization invited by the new
government to take Christian values to the schools in the former Soviet Union.
Kathy spent her later years in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, where she was widowed
14 years ago after 58 years of marriage. She was preceded in death by her husband
Charles, her parents, and her sister Myrl Kirstein. She is survived by her four children,
Cindy Johnson (Ron), Chad Crowther (Cindy), Gaye D Crowther, and Bradford
Crowther (Catheryne); nine grandchildren – Kathryn Hills (Jay), Amy Scerbo (Carmine),
Charlie Crowther, Rebecca Stump (Templeton), Stephen Johnson (Ashley), Ashleigh
Andrade (Jonathan), Amelia Crowther, Emily Valentine (Henry), and Michael Crowther
(Molly); and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be given to Knollwood Christian
School
