Margaret Brodie Reed

Margaret Brodie (Hall) ReedSylacauga, AL - Margaret Brodie Hall Reed, 98, of Sylacauga, AL passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at her home.  She was born in Huntsville, AL on May 13, 1914 to Jean Brodie Hall and Walter Fulgham Hall.  She graduated from Huntsville High School in 1934.  She moved to Birmingham and lived in the newly constructed Quinlan Castle Apts. while attending Alverson Business College.  She returned to Huntsville to work for the Probate Judge in Madison County.  She was a member of Las Amigas Dance Club and was crowned Huntsville’s Miss Monte Sano in 1938.  In 1939, Brodie married Ramon E. Reed, and his career as a civil engineer took them to Sylva, NC, Massena, NY, Pittsburgh, PA, Kemano, B.C. Canada, Vancouver, B.C. Canada, Richland, WA, and Tres Marias, Brazil before settling down in Sylacauga, AL in 1958.  Anyone who knew Brodie knew she was an outspoken advocate for causes that mattered to her including civil rights, politics, and Auburn football.  She was a true patriot and a dedicated Republican, well known in Talladega County for her hard work in the 60’s and 70’s establishing the Talladega County Republican Party.  She was a charter member of the Sylacauga Service League and was an avid supporter of the Sylacauga School System.  She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Sylacauga and served in various capacities.  Brodie was devoted to her family and surrounded them with wonderful food, fresh flower arrangements, beautiful needlework, and extraordinary holiday preparations.  Brodie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ramon E. Reed and her son, James Stuart Reed.  She is survived by her sons, Carlton L. Reed (Toni) of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jonathan E. Reed (Diana) of Sydney, NSW, Australia, and two daughters, Grace E. Reed and Jean B. Reed, both of Birmingham, AL, and her grandchildren: Pam Reed, Alicia Reed, Leslie Reed, Jenefer Reed, Callum Reed, Adair Whetstone, Brodie Whetstone, and Reed Whetstone.  The family would like to express heartfelt love and gratitude to their mother’s dedicated care givers: Helen Fuller, Jamie Norred, Sharon Northcutt, Denise Wallis, Geneva Woods, and the staff at New Beacon Hospice.  Visitation will be at Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga on Thursday, August 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The family will also receive friends at First United Methodist Church in Sylacauga on Friday, August 10, at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at the church.  Graveside will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Republican National Committee, the First United Methodist Church of Sylacauga, or the Sylacauga Schools Foundation.
