Mary Cardwell, age 83, of Sylacauga, Alabama passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021. Mary was born March 13, 1938. A graveside service for Mary will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. She is survived by Daughter and Son in Law, Charmelle and Stephen E. Lewis; Sister and best friend, Judy Butts; and Brothers, Donald Wright (Patti), Bloise Wright (Donna), and William Wright. She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charlie “Goose” Cardwell.
She owned Mary’s Beauty Bar in Sylacauga for over 50 years and made countless lifelong friendships. She also taught cosmetology at Modern Beauty School. She never failed to go to a hospital, nursing home, or a client’s home to take care of their hair. She worked as a hairstylist at Curtis and Son Funeral Home for many years, even following her retirement, because she felt it was the last kind thing she could do for a person. Her services were invaluable, her heart was huge, and she treated every person who walked into her shop with kindness and respect.
She was a member of Mignon Baptist Church, teacher of Mission Friends, member of the Pilot Club, and an avid bowler. She loved spending time at her second home at Lake Martin and, along with Goose, taught so many people how to waterski. She developed a hobby of videoing football games, birthday parties, weddings, and special gatherings just to be able to share the special memories with families. Later in life, she enjoyed making bracelets and challenging anyone who was willing to a game of Wii bowling. She truly had a heart of gold, a wonderful spirit, and made everyone around her smile.
Charmelle and Steve would like to extend a very special thanks to her family at Southern Care New Beacon Hospice - particularly her daily caregivers, Taylor Shaw Wilson, Calandrise Borden Patterson, and Jana Cooper, as well as Brandi Chaivers and Jennifer Kirkland. Their services were invaluable.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Care House of Sylacauga, Lake Martin Animal Shelter, or a charity of your choice. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.curtisandsonfh.com for the Cardwell family. Curtis and Son North to direct.
