Mary Virginia Moates (88) passed away on January 25, 2022 at Arbor Springs Health and Rehab in Opelika, AL. She was born February 11, 1933 in Talladega Springs, AL to Ben G. Avant and Lela B. Avant. She grew up in Sylacauga and Hollins, and after her marriage to Horace Camp in 1949 she lived in various towns in Alabama and in Buena Vista, GA due to moves necessitated by Mr. Camp’s job with the Central of Georgia Railroad. They returned to Sylacauga in 1970, and moved to Hollins in 1977. She moved from Hollins to Auburn in 2016 and resided at Summer Village Senior Living Community to be near her oldest daughter, Brenda Winborne, her primary caretaker. She was a long-time member of Hollins Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Horace R. Camp (married 1949-1982) and Everette Moates (married 1985-2012). She is survived by 4 children, Roland Wayne Camp (Laurie) of Peachtree Corners GA, Brenda Camp Winborne (Royce-deceased) of Auburn, Jerry Lamar Camp (Kay) of Milton FL and Wanda Camp Brown of Auburn. She is survived by 4 grandsons, Kevin R. Camp (Susan) of Decatur GA, Kenneth L. Camp (Miriam) of Roswell GA, Robert E. Brown III (Shawn) of Cumming GA and Daniel C. Brown (Jennifer) of Ft. Worth TX. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Claire and Caroline Camp of Decatur, GA, Samuel, Mary Laura, and Mavis Camp of Roswell, GA, and Jackson, Lilly and Reid Brown of Ft. Worth TX.
There will be a visitation for family and friends at Curtis and Son North Chapel in Sylacauga at 11 AM on Saturday, January 29, followed by a service in the Chapel at Noon with interment at Hollins Cemetery.
