Mary C Ray

Mary Catherine Ray, age 96, of Sylacauga, passed away April 11, 2021. She was born May 15, 1924, to her parents, Frank Hugh and Ora Mae Gartman Harford in Whistler Alabama, where she attended elementary school. She graduated from Murphy High school in Mobile AL.

After high school she was employed by Kraft Jewelry and Merchant’s Credit Bureau in Mobile AL.

During WWII she knitted scarfs for the military and volunteered at City Hospital for several hours two times a week.

She was married on June 29, 1946 to Mr. Robert Ray.

In 1950 she joined her husband in Childersburg AL. Where he was employed by Kimberly Clark, and joined First Baptist of Childersburg, where she enjoyed many years as president of WMU, XYZ Ladies, a member of the adult choir, and on the committee for the history of the First Baptist Church.

After her sons started school, she was employed by Talladega Board of Education in many different positions, Craddick Clinic, and Dr. Robert Grey.

Mary had fond memories of traveling with Robert to Alabama baseball and football games and other places of interest, in their motorhome.

After an accident in 2016 she moved to Spring Terrace in Sylacauga, where she enjoyed not cooking and the wonderful care she received.

She is survived by her sons, Robert Ray and Ronald Barry Ray, and granddaughter, Jessica Kelly Robinson (Jimmy)

Graveside services will be Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Greenhill Cemetery in Childersburg AL. at 1pm, with a visitation prior at Curtis and Son Childersburg Chapel from 12 noon until 1pm.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to WMU Foundation at First Baptist Church Childersburg.
