May Dong Kao, 90, was born December 20, 1935, in China, and passed away on November 2, 2026. She was a resident of Sylacauga, Alabama. May will be remembered with deep respect for a life marked by steadfast faith, devoted family love, and the quiet strength with which she guided those around her.
Beginning in the 1980s, May worked in the catering business, a calling she shared with her husband through most of her life. Those who knew May understood that her love of cooking was never merely about the meal itself—it was about the joy of watching others enjoy what she had prepared, and the care she expressed through service. Her devotion to her family was constant, and she held a special affection for her grandkids, who brought her particular pride and happiness.
May was married to Sherman Kao for 30 years before his passing in 1993. In the years that followed, she continued to be a steady presence—one who encouraged devotion and faith within her family, living as a strong woman of faith who urged those she loved to hold fast to the same commitment.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Kao. She is survived by her children, Corps Officer David Kao (Jill), Michael Kao, Angela Kao, and Carol McCaleb (Michael); and her grandchildren, Jase McCaleb (Rainey), Dr. Tucker McCaleb, Trace McCaleb, Anna Michal McCaleb, and Caleb Kao.
Visitation will be held at Curtis and Son Funeral Home, North Chapel, 1315 Talladega Hwy, Sylacauga, Alabama 35150, on November 8, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. A Private Family Graveside will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, 1501 Talladega Highway, Sylacauga, Alabama 35150, on November 8, 2026, beginning at 2:30 pm. May’s final resting place will be Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, 1501 Talladega Highway, Sylacauga.

The family extends special thanks to Enhabit Hospice; to her nurses, Savannah, Tamera, April, and Riesha; to her aid, Ebony; and to her caregivers, Render, Judy, and Marion. The family also offers special thanks to Sylacauga First Baptist Church for their prayers and encouragement.
Psalm 139:1-6
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
