Stephanie Phillips McGhee, 62, of Sylacauga, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her home after a lengthy illness on October 20, 2022. Her funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church in Sylacauga with the Reverend Andy Curtis officiating. The family will receive friends at the church at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Stephanie was raised in Eastaboga and is a graduate of Walter Wellborn High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University and her master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She was a phenomenal teacher and spent her entire career as a classroom and art instructor for the sensory impaired at the Helen Keller School at the Alabama Institute of Deaf & Blind (AIDB).
Stephanie was a member of the Sylacauga First United Methodist Church where she served on the Kindergarten Board of Directors. She was also a charter member and treasurer of the Sylacauga Lions Club. Other affiliations included the AIDB Education Association, Alabama Education Association, Alabama Education Retirees Association, and the Pinhoti Trail Runners.
Stephanie is preceded in death by her parents, Pamela and Charles Phillips. She is survived by her husband, Robert McAlston “Mac” McGhee; her brothers, David (Dawn) Phillips and Johnny Ray (Kim) Phillips, both of Eastaboga; her sisters-in-law, Kasi (Todd) Parsons of Montgomery and Amy (Tony) Albers of Irondale; her mother-in-law, Brenda (Virgil) McGrady of Trussville; her father-in-law James McGhee of Birmingham; her nieces and nephews, Jordan David (Amanda) Phillips, Lilyanne (Jared) Vera, Hunter Phillips, Will Phillips, Hammond (Allison) Parsons, Mac Parsons, Kirstyn (David) Hodges and Jacob Hogeland; great-nieces and great-nephew, Harper Vera, Hattie Vera, Kole Hodges and Harper Hogeland; and, a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and devoted friends.
In lieu of flowers, Stephanie requested memorials be made to either the First United Methodist Church Roof Project or the First United Methodist Kindergarten, 105 East Spring Street, Sylacauga, Alabama 35150.
