Wendell Charles Hubbard, 82, of Attalla, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Sylacauga Health and Rehab on July 27, 2024. His funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Attalla with the Reverend Harvey Beck officiating. The family will receive friends at the church at 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Wendell was born in Etowah County in the Carlisle community and raised in the nearby community of Rockledge. He graduated from the former Etowah County High School before receiving his undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University and his master’s and Ed.S. degrees from the University of Alabama. A lifelong educator, he began his teaching career at Niceville High School in Niceville, Florida, before returning to teach and coach at his alma mater, Etowah High School, in Attalla. He spent the remainder of his career before retirement as a long-time administrator with the Attalla City school system.
In addition to his career in education, Wendell will best be remembered as a phenomenal athlete who received numerous athletic scholarship offers before signing with Jacksonville State. While at JSU, he was one of the rare collegiate two-sport lettermen excelling in basketball and football.
Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Cecil Hubbard, and his sister Sandra Harris all of Sardis City. He is survived by his daughter, Amy (Steve) Marlowe of Sylacauga; his son, Matt (Natalie) Hubbard of Sylacauga; his son, Drew (Stacy) of Littleton; his brother, Mike Hubbard of Rockledge; his sister, Page (Keith) Wright of Sardis City; his brother-in-law, Woodrow Harris of Sardis City; his grandchildren, Tommy Marlowe, Grier Marlowe, Brady Hubbard, Hayden Hubbard, Preslee Hubbard, and Braydon Hubbard; his former wife of forty-three years, Dottie Wright Garner of Birmingham; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
