William "Billy" Ralph Hodges

July 25, 1938March 24, 2021

William R. (Billy) Hodges died peacefully at his home in Newnan, Georgia, on March 24th, 2021. Born on July 25th, 1938, to Edgar H. and Willie S. Hodges, Billy grew up in Coosa County, Alabama, and graduated from Sylacauga High School in 1957. After serving in the Air National Guard for a few years, he married and started a family. He lived and worked mostly in the Sylacauga area until moving to Perryton, Texas, in 1981 to begin a career in oil field sales. After his retirement, he moved to Newnan, Georgia.

His high-school yearbook description as “happy-go-lucky” was an apt characterization of Billy’s perspective on life. He took life’s ups and downs philosophically, with a sharp sense of humor and profound gratitude. He loved his family deeply and they will miss him very much.

He is survived by his children, Julia Ann Hodges (Michael Merino) of Washington, DC, Janet Hodges Roden (Rickey) of Sharpsburg, GA and Scott Hodges (Connie) of Bastrop, TX; grandchildren, Jill Duddleston (James), Laura Roden, Elizabeth Hodges, and Zachary Hodges; brothers, Reid Hodges and Edgar S. Hodges (Faye); sister, Kathryn Wright (Leonard); several nieces and nephews. Billy is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Yancey Hodges and brother, Rowe Hodges.

A small graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Sylacauga, Alabama at 2 PM on Saturday, March 27th. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch in Amarillo, Texas:

My memories of Billy, Liz ( my sister) and their three children are in a very special place in my heart. I had the great fortune to have lived close to them when I was going to nursing school, and for nearly 10 years after becoming a nurse. One of my best memories: I had to go to Birmingham to take a Pre- entrance exam for nursing school. Billy said here; take the “ bug”. I had never been to B’ham, nor had I driven a stick shift in the floor. He said “don’t will be fine & figure it all out...see you when you get back this afternoon.” I did fine..Billy always knew the right thing to say to me at the right time. And, he always wanted to meet anyone I was dating to give me his take on him. I love the entire family with all my heart. Aunt Margarett

I’m so sorry to hear about Mr. Hodges passing. I have so many fond memories of spending time with Billy and Liz and Julia, Janet, and Scott in Sylacauga at both homes. I still think of those sweet days when I drive by the houses when I’m in Sylacauga.
Your dad was a kind man to all who visited. I’m glad I knew him and you mom. May you memories bring the family comfort. Love you.
