Big Mike, you will be missed my brother.  He kept a smile on my face everyday in a place where its hard to be happy about anything.  Ill never forget you my man.

I didn't get to know Michael but I will say that he was blessed to be part of your loving family.  

Charley Ann and Lorraine, this has been a tragic year for you and I am so sorry that the death of Micheal followed so closely after your Mother's passing.  Please stick together my two strong friends and cherish your love for each other and the memories of Charlotte, your parents and Michael.

Although I can't be with you while you remember your loved one, you're in my thoughts from afar.

Rest in peace big brother. We had some good times throughout your life in childhood and as adults. Wish we had more time to do some of the things we had talked about doing. I'll miss your laugh, voice and competitive nature. You will never be forgotten!

My deepest sympathy goes out to you all....This has been a very hard time and I wish there was something I could say or do to make it better...I will never forget Michael's laugh it was one of a kind..May your memories bring you some comfort...

Although I didn't realize it at the time, I was given a gift on January 13, 2012.  That gift was spending the day with my nephew, Michael.  It was almost a week ago that he and I stood where he is now buried.  He was asking questions about some of the families who are buried near there, and then he walked to his Uncle GM's grave.  It was really a cold day, but Michael was like me.  We loved cold weather and would wear shorts when most people were wearing gloves and scarves.   We talked very much that day.  We had just had a nice week walking together, eating some good meals together, and playing Scrabble together.  Our family has always enjoyed playing games,such as Rook, and we think of certain people with their best game.  With Grommie, it was checkers, with Aunt Lola it is Boggle, and with Michael, it was Scrabble.  
Michael also loved animals like the rest of us, and he was great with our dog, Polo.  If you ever meet Polo, you'll understand how hard it can be to make him mind.  He held my little Chihuahua, Penny, during most of the drive through Sylvania, Statesboro and then back to Augusta.  They were so cute together, and I wish that I had taken a picture of them on our trip. Penny had been rather aloof to him before that, so he was happy they bonded.  I told him not to worry that she would probably growl at him again, and she did that night when he came over to play Scrabble with James and me.  And, yes, Michael won again!  I reminded him that day how Grommie held him when he was a baby and they would  bird watch together as Michael would point and say “Boid” .  She taught him to fish, also, which was one of his favorite things to do in life. I reminded him of when he was a baby how he would cry a lot at night and pull my hair as I would try to rock him to sleep.   He laughed, and as we know, Michael loved to laugh. He enjoyed pestering me, and I even said while we were here, “Charlotte, Michael is driving me crazy!”  He loved it.  During the past week, he had enjoyed us Skyping with James and Ginger and looking at pictures that were shared by the Smith Family that included a picture of him as a baby and several of Charlotte when she lived in New Jersey.  I enjoyed looking at the pictures as much as he did.  We were saddened as we watched a video of my mom with Tinki-Tu from 2009.  He loved MaMa very much!  We laughed a lot remembering many of the things my father used to say.
Jessica, James, Lorraine, Earl, and I feel really good about our recent time with Michael.  Jessica loved to hear him talk and laugh.  James was enjoying time with his brother.  Earl and Lorraine were enjoying his visit and, of course, his help in the yards; He was a great worker!  I was enjoying talking, eating, walking, and laughing with him which usually included my fussing at him.  It might sound ridiculous, but he enjoyed it when I did that-He felt the love.  After all, I was the elder, and that's what aunts do to their mischevious nephews.
During our drive home on that Friday the 13th, and yes, we realized after we started the journey what day it was, we talked much about life and death while also reminiscing.  I told him that I wasn't feeling as sad as I thought I would be after going to the cemetery, and he said, “You shouldn't feel sad, Aunt Charley Ann.  Do you really think Mama and my mom would want you to feel sad all the time about them?  They would want us to keep on with our lives and try to enjoy our lives when we can.”  That was probably about twenty-four hours before Michael was gone.  
It is hard not to feel angry when losing someone especially after getting to really know him again.  We should try to remember those words Michael said to me on my last journey with him.

Michael, you will never be forgotten because your family will always have you in their hearts and their loving memories of you.

Dear Lorraine and Charley Anne,
I am sorry to learn of the death of your nephew.  I pray that you will find comfort in the memories that you both share of the life of Michael.   With deepest sympathy.
