With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Alfred P. DePhillips, who was born on September 17, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, and passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, at the age of 93. He was a longtime resident of Syosset, New York, and the son of Elizabeth (Mattielo) and Alfred J. DePhillips.
Al was predeceased by his beloved wife, Yolan J. DePhillips, and his brother, Robert DePhillips. He is survived by his sons, Alfred M. DePhillips (Catherine) and Michael P. DePhillips (Catherine); and his cherished grandchildren, Sean DePhillips, Michaela DePhillips, and AJ DePhillips.
Al was a true family man whose kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication were evident throughout his life, especially in him being a devoted and loving husband for 49 years, and a wonderful father, grandfather and uncle.
As a young man, Al was an outstanding all-around athlete, excelling particularly in baseball. As a catcher, he was signed by both the New York Yankees and Kansas City Athletics organizations. His love and deep knowledge of sports remained a constant in his life, and he went on to coach his sons’, and later his grandchildren’s, sports teams, which brought him immense pride and joy. Al continued to play softball well into his 80s, a testament to his lifelong passion and energy not only to the sport of baseball but also to living life to the fullest.
Al proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned his undergraduate degree from St. John’s University and received a Master’s degree from City College of New York (CCNY).
Al retired after a long and distinguished career with the New York Police Department (NYPD), where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander of Detectives.
Al will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Swim Across America TEAM HOPE in memory of Al.
