Betty J. Ochs
October 10, 1933 – September 30, 2019
Betty Judith Ochs passed away peacefully on Monday, September 30th, 2019, at home in Syosset. Betty was born in Rockaway Beach, NY on October 10th, 1933 to Sidney and Martha Lipson.
After graduating from high school, Betty moved to Florida where she studied at the University of Miami. Moving on, she returned to New York where she met and married Norman Ochs. The rapidly expanding family soon moved to Merrick, New York. By the time the sixth child (surprise!) came along, it was clear the family had outgrown their Merrick home. Betty, Norm, and family moved to beautiful Oyster Bay Cove. Many happy days were spent there entertaining family and friends poolside.
Betty kept busy raising her children, caring for the house, and enjoying lively games of Mah-Jongg with her gang. She loved her cigarettes, coffee with hazelnut Coffee-Mate, and frequent family games of poker, where she took no prisoners. She was also an excellent cook. Her favorite show. What is Jeopardy? Back in the day, she donated a lot of money to various Atlantic City casinos. Bet was also a huge fan of Carribean heartthrob Harry Belafonte. Day-O!!
Betty (AKA Didi,Grandma and Bet) enjoyed a long, full life. She is survived by her brother Jeff Lipson (Karin), several nieces and nephews, six children: Elisa Abolafia, Michael Abolafia, Tom Ochs (Jen Shykula), Peter Ochs (Nadine Montague Ochs), Carrie Ochs Toledo (Romeo), Suzanne Ochs MacDevitt (Patrick), fourteen grandchildren: Jack, Marc, Damian, Bryan and Daniel Ochs, Lucia, Ruby and Beck Toledo, Finn, Declan, Sadie and Padraig MacDevitt, Fallon and Kirk Abolafia. And once again, Bryan Ochs.

From the early days in Florida as a baby,to Long Beach...onto Merrick..then the great house in Oyster Bay Cove,my Mother always supported and guided me..In the last year I apologized a thousand times to her for the mischief and grief I caused, only to see her smile and say”Pish tosh, you turned out ok!”The consummate Mother of 6,she cooked,cleaned..and back in the day,she could throw a slipper across the house and nail me good, even as I turned a corner!...She is with me,always..Love,Michael
