Born in Astoria, Queens, Dennis dedicated his life to service and passion. He was a proud member of the FDNY, retiring in 1995 with the rank of Lieutenant after years of commitment to protecting others.
Dennis had a zest for life and diverse interests that brought him joy and fulfillment. He was an avid sailor who found peace on the water, a licensed shortwave radio operator who enjoyed connecting with others, and a devoted steam train enthusiast. A lifelong learner, Dennis also loved reading and exploring new ideas.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa (Terry) DeCarlo; his children Alison and Kevin (Robyn); and his cherished grandchildren Victoria and Nathan. Dennis is also remembered by his siblings Jame (Anne), Robert, Mary (Peter) Gunther, Patrick, Martha (Patrick) Ford and an large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Francis and Lorraine (Clements) O'Brien and his sister-in-law Linda O’Brien.
Dennis’s legacy of service, curiosity, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial visitation for Dennis will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Beney Funeral Home, 79 Berry Hill Road, Syosset, New York 11791. A funeral mass will occur Monday, January 6, 2025 at 9:45 AM at St. Edward Confessor RC Church, 205 Jackson Ave, Syosset, New York 11791.
