Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Ed was the eldest son of the late Edward E. Carr and Edyth Carr. It was there that he met his future wife of 56 years, the late Jean (McQuillen) Carr.
From his earliest years, Ed had a strong sense of purpose that would shape his life. While still in high school, he peeled potatoes at the family restaurant, Brennan and Carr, and used his savings to buy a 1931 Ford Model A (the "Old Car") that still runs today. When the Korean War began, Ed proudly joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a fire chief from 1951 to 1953. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from St. John's University and settled into married life shortly after.
Ed and Jean moved their growing family to Syosset, Long Island, where they raised six children and formed many lasting friendships. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Ed began a long and successful journey as a self-employed engineer. Never missing a day of work, he applied his practical knowledge and technical skill to every task he took on. At age 90, he retired (reluctantly) from his company, D.L. Carr Distributors. The highlight of his career was his work on the Lunar Module at Grumman during the Apollo 11 mission of the 1960's.
Ed's love of the sea drew him to Montauk each summer for more than 50 years. He and Jean always looked forward to spending weekends on their boat, surrounded by their many wonderful friends. When he was not out fishing, Ed could be found tinkering on the dock, intent on repairing an engine or anything else that needed fixing.
Ed loved and took great pride in his family, including his large extended family. He often visited beautiful Lake Desolation, outside Saratoga Springs, NY, and had fond memories of fun-filled family gatherings there.
A devout Catholic, Ed was a longtime parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor in Syosset where he attended Mass each morning for as long as he was able.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, Jean Carr; his son, Daniel Carr; his brothers, William Carr and Robert Carr; his son-in-law Peter Conetta; and his parents. He is survived by his children Nancy Worden (Doug), Lynn Conetta, Jeanne Hunter (Alex), Edward Carr, Jr. (Diane) and Michael Carr (Carrie); his grandchildren Kevin Conetta, Kait Conetta (Mark Powlen), Erik Worden, Chris Conetta (Jacquelyn), Madeline Worden, Alex Hunter, Michaela Hunter, Eddie Carr, Patrick Hunter and Michael Carr, Jr.; and his great-grandchildren Jack Powlen, Michael Powlen and James Conetta.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 205 Jackson Avenue, Syosset, NY, on Wednesday, October 7th, at 9:45 am. Interment with military honors will follow in Calverton National Cemetery. All are invited to attend.
The family sincerely thanks Ed’s caregivers for their kindness, dedication, and compassion, especially during the past several months.
For nearly 95 years, Ed touched many lives. He will be dearly missed.
