ALEXANDER, Dr. James S. of Syosset, NY on May 7, 2017. Beloved partner for over 50 years of Michael P. Ciavarelli and Uncle to Jack Alexander, Lea Greve, Carolyn Wheale and to a myriad nieces and nephews of Mr. Ciavarelli. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgetown University with a Pre-Med BA, then went on to graduate from Georgetown Medical School as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Following graduation from medical school Dr. Alexander completed his internship at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco CA, and went on to serve as General Medical Officer while stationed in Whittier, AK. After he left the service, Dr. Alexander began his focus on pediatrics while a Resident and then Chief Resident at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. A Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology followed at New York Hospital-Cornell, New York City. The next six years were spent as a member of the Pediatric Staff of Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, NY and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein School of Medicine. Finally, Dr. Alexander found his way to Long Island where he joined a General Pediatric Practice Group in Syosset where he remained until his retirement in 1992. During the height of the AIDS epidemic of the late 80’s and early 90’s, Dr. Alexander and his partner, Mr. Ciavarelli, volunteered at the People with AIDS Coalition (PWAC) and also served as advisor to several groups within the PWAC organization. Along with his partner, Dr. Alexander hosted several fund raisers and dinner receptions, taking advantage of their beautiful home garden as the venue. Gardening was a joyful avocation, especially his cultivation of daffodils. There are many friends and relatives who mourn the passing of Dr. Alexander and, at the same time, we are grateful for having been a part of his life, well lived. Following cremation, Dr. Alexander will be remembered on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Beney Funeral Home, 79 Berry Hill Road, Syosset, NY, between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders.
