OBITUARY

John William Cottone

December 7, 1958December 22, 2018

John William Cottone, DMD, 60, of Locust Valley, N.Y., passed away Dec. 22, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Dr. Cottone was known by hundreds as their trusted and friendly family dentist, a profession to which he gave his talent and heart for 30 years. He owned a practice in Syosset, which he expanded in 2001 as Berry Hill Dentistry, PC. Dr. Cottone was a true professional of the science of dentistry who dedicated his time and concentration to the latest advancements in the dental field. But, it was the passion for the art of his craft that set him apart. A smile is each person’s gift to the world, and Dr. Cottone took seriously his role in bringing the happiest, brightest smile to each of his patients. In fact, he was known for his own smile — offering it freely to anyone at any time. It is perhaps what his friends and family will remember most of John, something he never failed to give them even after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July. For the next five months, he fought the disease valiantly and selflessly. His family and patients remained his top priority, and John kept going to work despite the battle he faced. The most powerful source of John’s smile, however, was his family. He met Carol Anne Schmitz, DMD, while studying at the Fareligh Dickinson University School of Dentistry. After he graduated in 1985, the two married in 1997. Dr. Schmitz joined her husband at Berry Hill Dentistry and together they had two children, Julianne and Christian. He proudly spoke of his angel Julianne’s kindness and intellect and best-friend Christian’s skill on the ice hockey rink. They loved sports spending time with their father on the golf course, at home, and anywhere they were together. Born on Dec. 7, 1958, John was raised in Farmingdale and is a 1977 graduate of Farmingdale High School. He was an accomplished wrestler, pole vaulter, and gymnast. Along with his wife and children, John is survived by his parents, Charles and Jeanette; brother Charles (Bridget); father-in-law Dr. Robert M. Schmitz (Marion); brother-in-law Robert W. Schmitz, DMD (Erika); sister-in-law Jeannie Babinski; and nieces and nephews Nicholas and Michael Cottone, James and Johanna Babinski, and Gabi and Gracie Schmitz. Friends and family are invited to call at the Beney Funeral Home, 79 Berry Hill Rd., Syosset on Dec. 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 93 Anstice St., Oyster Bay on Friday, Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, an educational fund has been established for Julianne and Christian. We are so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Cottone was not only a kind and wonderful man but a true caring professional in his field. I will never forget when we were having financial trouble and closing our business in 1999. Dr. Cottone said "I will take care of you and your family; that's what's important. I know you will pay me". We did, thank heavens, and continued our relationship all these years; sharing our personal stories and memories of when our children were young. There was more than one occasion when Dr. Cottone went above and beyond to put one of us at ease. His smile was an inspiration and a joy. We will always remember him in our hearts. May your wonderful memories give you strength during this difficult time. What a gift he left behind; the true lesson of Kindness and Joy.
With our deepest sympathy to all who loved him so much,

I was a patient of Dr. Cottone for almost 30 years and you could always count on him for a smile, a pleasant visit, compassion and professionalism! Whether it was golf, music or the Yankees, he was always ready with a friendly word and interest in his patients, as he showed to me and my wife Suzanne when we came in. We even laughed about his sharing a birthday with my mother! We will miss him and offer our sincerest condolences to his family, especially his wife and colleague Carol Anne and his children Julianne and Christian. We also want to express to his colleagues at Berry Hill Dentistry, especially my long-time hygenist Arlene and long-time staff Jennifer, Bridget and Amie - who I all consider friends - our sincere condolences for their loss too. I always noted the camaraderie he fostered in the office and I will miss him very much. Thanks and rest in peace!

There aren't enough words to say what a special person John was. He always had a smile on his face even throughout his illness. I am so thankful for the time I knew him and all that he has done for me. He was the best dentist and always put me at ease in his chair. My heart goes out to his family.

This is such sad news that came to me in Florida. When I moved here, it was very hard to find such a first class, honest dentist and a wonderful practice like Dr. Cottone's.
I reminisced with my friend Kate about our longtime friendship with Bridget. When Bridget married Charles, I made my connection with Dr. Cottone. I will remember all my dental visits in the 1990's as fun social events. I am so glad to have had a very special visit with Dr. Cottone to get his expertise a number of years since.
Every time I brush, I will always reflect on Dr. Cottone and his high quality and meticulous work that will last forever.
I extend my sincere condolences to all the Cottone family on your too young, too soon loss of your very special loved one who touched all our lives.

We met John almost 30 years ago! He was my Dad, my Sister Suzette and my dentist for some years. But our relationship was more like friends as we never went to see him at his office without making him laugh throughout our entire visit. He was always there with a smile on his face and a genuinely good nature. My heart breaks for his Wife Carol Ann and his beautiful children. God Bless all of them and God Bless his soul...Renée Guercia

John tutored me thru High School algebra. I only graduated because of him. He was so kind and generous with his time. He made this young girl feel special a long time ago and I will never forget him. Thinking of his family and hoping they find comfort in what John has meant to many people.
