Born Nicolina Angelina Maglione in Manhasset, NY, on January 30, 1929, Lili was an award-winning, nationally-recognized artist whose canvases have hung in renowned museums and galleries around the country, including locally at the Heckscher Museum of Art, the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, the United Nations Invitational in NY, and the National Association of Women Artists worldwide museum exhibit tour, among others.
Lili grew up during the depression and had to pave her own way in the art world at a time when being a woman and a daughter of Italian immigrants was a handicap. She supported herself and studied in NYC at the Traphagen School of Art & Design, and
then completed a B.A. of Fine Arts at The Art Students League in 1952. Lili began her career as a fashion artist with Butterick Patterns from 1952 to 1953, a fashion artist consultant with Miss America, Inc., from 1953 to 1954, and a fashion artist consultant
for the Simplicity Pattern Company from 1958 to 1962, having been the department head for the fashion art office from 1953 to 1958.
Lili then went on to develop a successful career as a nationally-recognized painter as she married and raised a family on Long Island… living in Great Neck, Plandome, Sands Point, Huntington and finally Cold Spring Harbor. She held the positions of an Art
Department Consultant for the Nassau County Museum of Art from 1984 to 1986, the Director of Decorative Affairs for the Harbor Acres Association from 1987 to 1989, and Director of Decorative Affairs for Sands Point Museum from 1989 to 1991.
Recognized among the 10 Women Of Distinction by Distinction Magazine in 2007, she was presented with the Memorial Award from the National Arts Club in 2005 and 2006, the Annual Award from Artists Magazine in 2005, the American Artists Professional League Award in 2004, the Memorial Award from Pen + Brush in 2003, and both the Memorial Award and the Salmagundi Award from the National Association of Women Artists in 2001. Most recently, two of Lili’s abstracts were selected for the prestigious Heckscher Museum Biennial Exhibition, painted when she was 95 years old. Lili’s lifetime of works can be viewed on her website: https://lilimaglione.com/
Lili’s paintings are included in the collections of President Nixon, Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Cola Corporation, The Forbes Family, Thomas Kellaway, Publisher, American Art Review Magazine and dozens of other private and corporate collectors. Lili was also a
gifted gardener and a lover of animals, especially her beloved dachshund Clyde.
Lili’s passion for art was second only to her family, whom she centered her world around. Many of her talents and gifts live on in her children and grandchildren. In addition to her remarkable artistic talent, she was known for her grace, sophistication, strength, sense of style, generosity, dry sense of humor, and unconditional love. As one astute family member observed, “Lili gently centered the tone of a room, even before she said a word.”
Lili is survived by her loving children, Catherine and Douglas (Palma) and her grandchildren Zachary (Stephanie), Ian, Benjamin (Danielle), Miranda, Spencer and Julia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Angelo and Mary Maglione; her brother, Ralph; her devoted husband of 56 years Bernhart Rumphorst; and her cherished companion John Barcia. She will be greatly missed and always remembered by her family, extended family, and friends. May God grant her eternal rest after a long, well-lived life.
Lili, Everything will be alright.
