Susan T. Bergin of Syosset, New York passed away comfortably at her home on June 1, 2020 following a courageous battle with cancer and other significant vascular and cardiac issues. She was 61 years old.
A dedicated wife and mother, Susan’s life drastically changed in 2007 when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening vascular condition and had her left leg amputated above the knee. Undaunted, Susan relearned how to walk over the ensuing years with the use of a prosthetic and successfully regained her independence. Susan was especially proud to be able to dance with her son at his 2018 wedding. Moreover, the strength and optimism with which she pursued her rehabilitation inspired her daughter to become a successful occupational therapist.
Susan was also a devoted member of her local parish, St. Edward’s, and of The Catholic Daughters of America, and she assisted with various annual fundraisers to support these organizations. Susan was also fond of her friends and neighbors, with whom she got together with every Monday to watch their favorite shows. Susan’s outgoing, appreciative, and friendly disposition resulted in countless lifelong friendships that she cherished as well.
Susan is survived by her husband of 38 years, Peter, and her two children, Brian (Ana-Karine) and Casey. A funeral mass is still being planned by the family. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please consider donating to Limbs for Life and limbsforlife.org , a charitable organization that provides financial assistance to amputees.
