WOLFSON - Thomas of Melville, NY died in his sleep on September 6, 2013 due to congestive heart failure and Alzheimer's Disease surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 26, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY to Harry and Lottie Wolfson. Graduating from James Madison High School in Brooklyn, he attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. During WWII, he served in the Pacific on the destroyer USS Wainwright achieving the rank of Lieutenant JG. He later continued his education at the Univ. of Iowa on the GI Bill, majoring in mathematics and physics to earn a B.S. Degree, then completed a Master's Degree in Applied Science and some credits toward a PhD. At the University of Iowa, he met Lois Harris & they were married in 1948. They settled in the NY area and eventually moved to Syosset, LI where they lived for 43 years. He owned a construction company for five years and later joined Grumman Aerospace as an Avionics Engineer and was an integral part of sch projects as the Lunar Module (LM) and the F-14 Tomcat. He was a man of wide-ranging interests who enjoyed reading, gardening, finance, health & medicine, politics, computers, photography, blackjack and duplicate bridge, coin collecting, car repair and his pet dogs. He was a lifelong learner and loved to tackle projects in his own "do-it-yourself" way. In later years, he was an involved grandfather participating in many family activities. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lois; daughters: Diana Wolfson and Laura Saxman; son-in-law Michael Saxman; and three grandchildren: Nicole, David & Tamara Saxman. Service to be held at Beney Funeral Home in Syosset on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 10AM; burial to follow at Calverton National Cemetery. Visitation with family at their home on Monday & Tuesday starting at 5PM.
