William W. Lewis, Jr.- of Syosset, NY on May 15, 2018. William was born on January 14, 1932 to Florence (Watts) and William W. Lewis Sr. He married Joyce Ellen Weber on December 21, 1955; she precedes him in death in 1984. He is also predeceased by his second wife, Carlene Bayer. He attended The Choate School from 1946-1950 where he was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams; he was captain of the baseball team in his senior year. A Choate faculty member, in a college recommendation, characterized Bill as a very “competent young athlete. He was the unchallenged first-string fullback…intelligent, courageous, and coachable…he is enthusiastic, well liked and a respected leader.” Following Choate he attended Williams College and graduated from Alfred University. Bill graduated with highest marks at Fort Bliss and was stationed in Germany for two years as a Second Lieutenant; assigned to Guided Missile School.
After returning from Germany, Bill, Joyce and family called Syosset home. During his years in Syosset, he was a positive role model and left a lasting impact on a countless number of Syosset youth. A founding member of Syosset Little League, he worked tirelessly for decades to share his love of baseball long after his children and grandchildren had outgrown the program.
He was the loving father of Nancy Morrison of Todd NC; Lynn (the late Martin) Schnellenbach or Ridge, NY; William III (Eileen) Demarest, NJ; and Thomas (Miki) Pound Ridge, NY. Cherished grandfather of Bradley (Elisa), Daniel, and Robert Morrison; Carlee, Martin, and Leana Schnellenbach; William IV, Kaitlin, Meghan, and Thomas Lewis; and Scarlett and Isadora Lewis. Devoted great grandfather of July Francis, Evangeline and Elessandra Morrison. Dear brother of Jean Lewis Bralla. Memorial Visitation on Sunday, May 20, 2018, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM at Beney Funeral Home, 79 Berry Hill Road, Syosset, NY 11791. Religious Service at Beney Funeral Home on Monday, May 21, 2018, at 10:00 AM. Interment of ashes to follow at Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Syosset Baseball Association, P.O. Box 302, Syosset, NY 11791 in his memory.
