

William “Bill” Fontana, 76, of Syracuse passed away at home on Wednesday with his family by his side. A life resident of Syracuse, Bill attended North High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Lemoyne College in 1958. Bill also received his Masters at SUNY Binghamton. He worked for 42 years as a Civilian Radar Engineer at the Rome Air Development Center (RADC), the R & D branch of the US Air Force at the former Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY. Bill headed several projects involving the development and upgrading of radars for surveillance and detection of missiles and satellites. He was originally a communicant of St. Peter’s Church where in the 1960’s he organized the Senior Citizens Program and Holiday Food Basket Drives. Then after marrying he became a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He is predeceased by his sisters, Josephine Timpano and Angelina “Angie” Mello.
Bill is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol Muren Fontana; sons, Peter and Matthew; sisters, Margherita “Marge” (Salvatore) Manfredi, Emelia “Millie” (Ed) Albrigo and Frances “Fran” Carbone and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, 8 a.m. at FARONE & SON FUNERAL HOME and 9 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call, Sunday from 2 to 5 pm at the funeral home, 1500 Park Street.
